It wasn’t that long ago when the idea of an on-demand radio show wasn’t even a thought. Radio happened live, and unless you popped a tape into the player to record it, you weren’t going to hear it again.

The podcast changed all that. Now, the talk radio shows you want to hear are downloadable and available on your schedule. But just how popular are podcasts? Are people taking advantage of them as much as you’d think? The infographic below has the answers!

  @jon: You do have a point. 

  But all of those things you mention as flaws or drawbacks of podcasts are their strongest points if you consider them as a perfect “companion” for walks, or jogging, or riding the bike… I would never get hooked on podcasts if I didn’t start listening while walking my dog. An hour of walking around the same old neighborhood, absolutely no way you can do that while reading, so listen to a podcast or a book. 

  And soon enough I got the habit, and realized I can listen while doing the dishes, folding the laundry, dusting… Basically, filling all the time while you just can’t read. Give it a try. Maybe it’ll work for you as well :)

  My biggest problem with podcasts is the effort and time it takes. I don’t commute much, working out of my home, and I don’t like sitting still to listen to something (podcasts take mental effort, so multi-tasking is out of the question if you want it to be worth your time.) I can read much faster, at my own pace, and what I want, skipping boring illustrations, etc. I like the idea of a podcast, but I always end up not listening. Many podcasts are too long. Once you pass five minutes, you pass into a time frame that isn’t for me. Ironically, I can read long, multi-page articles and books, but audio or video, after a few minutes, begin to bore me. Honestly, I guess I’d just rather read…

    I produce at least one podcast a week, Jon, and I have to say that I agree with you completely! Unless I’m driving alone (which is unusual) I just don’t have the opportunity to enjoy podcasts.
