Ntungamo town’s new division chief, Jacob Binyerere, swore into office on Monday in style. He showed up accompanied by his eight cheering women.

The town clerk, Assy Abireebe, who was also the presiding officer, had restricted each new leader to only five guests. But in Binyerere’s case, it was hard to determine who could be let in and who could not. Eventually, all of his guests were allowed. Binyerere swore in amid wild cheering, especially when each of his wives introduced herself.

Three of them live in rented premises in Ntungamo town, while the rest live in neighbouring villages, each in her own home. The businessman-turned-politician owns a lot of land, cows, coffee and small businesses. The electorate said they had confidence in a man who knows how to harmoniously run an eight-wife family.
