The opposition is the enemy, period!

General Yoweri Museveni, President of Uganda

In the Monitor newspaper published on Monitor June 21 the Vice President Gilbert Bukenya said it is wrong for some people to taint names of members of Parliament from Buganda that they are against the Kabaka and his kingdom.
Prof. Bukenya warned that such politics of creating hatred will cause unnecessarily friction among the electorate. He said opposition members are continuing to benefit from the programmes of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) yet they still criticize its achievements.

The above statement from a whole vice president was quite amusing! According to His Excellency, the opposition is not supposed to benefit from government programmes, and if they do, they should not criticize government! My foot!

And in today’s New Vision (22 June 2010) during a visit to Palisa district, his Excellency said:

“The Movement brought you development. We have been in power for 24 years because the Movement is strong. Support us and we continue in power. You will get more,” Museveni said.

NRM got 51% of the votes in the last presidential election. The President described the 40% votes given to FDC, as wasted. “

” There are votes you wasted and cast for FDC What has FDC done for you?” he asked.

A surprising question from the president! What does a party in the opposition without government resources do for the people? Of course it won’t build roads, but it has created awareness to the people about bad governance, corruption, human rights abuses and undemocratic tendencies exhibited by the current government. And that is what the FDC and other opposition parties have done.

Interestingly, the question asked by the president is what the opposition is supposed to ask the government. A party in power is supposed to undertake development for its people not as a favour, not as party members, but as their right.
