A group of young men and women in Uganda formed an organisation called The Young Professional Manager’s Association. The objectives of the association are to share experiences, knowledge and advice. Their patron is Professor Waswa Balunywa. They meet several times a year and every beginning of year go into a 2-3 day retreat.
This year I was privileged to participate in some of their activities. The retreat was held at our ancestral home in Iganga. There were a number of activities including workshops and sharing experiences. Every year each member tells the rest what he/she hopes to achieve during the year. Audits the previous year and informs others how far he/she went in achieving his objectives. Each explains why he/she failed and how to avoid pitfalls in future.
The group also went to a local girls primary school in the neighbourhood and talked to the teachers and further drafted a strategic and business plan for management. Later in the evening there was a do at Professor Balunywa’s research centre at CMS in Iganga. There was roast Goat meat, tea, coffee and disco music. For the first time in 20 years I saw Professor Balunywa dancing to pop music! The party was great despite there being no alcohol. There were games, quizzes, karaoke and many more interesting things.
