As is our custom, we celebrated Sinterklas day in style. This day is one of the public holidays in the Netherlands. Since 2004, we have always celebrated it with the help of our special family friend Louise Van den Bossche.
According to the Wikipedia,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinterklaas: In the Netherlands, Saint Nicholas' Eve (December 5) is the chief occasion for gift-giving. The evening is called "sinterklaasavond" or "pakjesavond" ("presents evening"). In the Netherlands, children receive their presents on this evening whereas in Belgium, children put their shoe in front of the fireplace on the evening of December 5, then go to bed, and find the presents around the shoes on the morning of the 6th.
It was a full house with all the children at home and a visiting nephew from Uganda. We were 11 people at our house. We told Louise that in Uganda, we used to have an average of 20 people at home every day.
At little Moses’ school, there was a lot of fanfare and we parents were also allowed to watch the appearance of Sinterklas and his Zwarte Piets. The children were given Kruidnoten, small, round ginger bread-like cookies and were allowed to sing Sinterklas rhymes.
